Featured poets for tonight:
Antony Dunn won the Newdigate Prize in 1995 and received an Eric Gregory Award in 2000. He has published three collections of poems: Pilots and Navigators (Oxford University Press 1998); Flying Fish (Carcanet OxfordPoets 2002); and Bugs (Carcanet OxfordPoets 2009), and is working towards completion of a fourth. Antony is a regular tutor for The Poetry School and the Arvon Foundation. He has worked on a number of translation projects with poets from Holland, Hungary, China and Israel, and was Poet in Residence at the University of York for 2006 and at the Ilkley Literature Festival in 2010. He is Director of the Bridlington Poetry Festival.

Bill Fitzsimons, Dublin-born local poet, is a relative new-comer in poetry terms, writing his first poems in his late 50s. He is a founder member of a Leeds-based Irish writers group, Lucht Focail (Word People) and has read at various venues in Leeds and elsewhere. He has also had work published in Poetry Monthly and Aireings; he has read on local radio and been published in three group Anthologies The Fifth Province, Triple Spiral and Views from the Lighthouse.

Hannah Hunt has been writing poetry for over forty years, and has had several poems published in journals as well as winning two prizes before her twentieth birthday. She finds inspiration both in the canon of great poets (from John Donne to Billy Collins) and in the natural world, chance encounters with people, and in wrestling with religious and environmental issues. She is especially interested in Celtic culture at the moment. In her other life she teaches English Literature for the Open University and other stuff for different universities.

Matthew Hedley Stoppard is a wanted man. When he is not writing poetry, he is a raider of piggybanks, a refuser of piggybacks and a defiler of council property. Until he is brought to justice, he reads from his debut collection A Family Behind Glass published by Valley Press, and his words can be found in anthologies and magazines, in print and online, and heard on vinyl via the Adult Teeth Recording Company.
Suzanne McArdle is currently studying for an MA in Creative Writing at Sheffield Hallam University, where she is completing her second novel, a psychological thriller. However she loves poetry, and finds that poems often poke their way out when she is showering or trying to sleep. Her poetry has been published in The Rialto, Aireings, the Grist anthology A Complicated Way of Being Ignored, and Matter.

Wendy Pratt was born in Scarborough and now lives near Filey. Her first pamphlet, Nan Hardwick Turns into a Hare was published by Prolebooks in 2011 and was reviewed favourably in Other Poetry and The Times Literary Supplement. She was also delighted to have her poem 'eating Mackerel' highly commended in the Swale Life April 2011 poetry competition. Her second collection, Museum Pieces, will be published by Prolebooks in December 2013. She has enjoyed publication of her poetry in Acumen, Snakeskin, Prole, Other Poetry, The Interpreter's House, Pennine Platform and The Frogmore Papers amongst others. As well as working full time as a Microbiologist, Wendy is studying towards a BA in English literature with the Open University.

Mestisa /headingley-events/event-details Thu, 16 May 2013 15:25:12 +0000 fra Mestisa performs traditional and popular music from Latin America; ranging from romantic boleros, Peruvian marineras, Argentinian zambas, Chilean tonadas to lively Bolivian huaynos.

Almost 14 years ago Ana Luisa and Barbara met in Leeds at one of the open mic nights at the The Grove and they've been playing together ever since forming the core of Mestisa. More recently Tenley joined, adding a percussion section - a crucial ingredient in the sounds of South American music. They have played all over, including festivals, charity events, even providing the entertainment at Leeds University for the Ambassador of Mexico!!

Their music has been influenced by the likes of Mercedes Sosa, Lila Downs, Inti Illimani, Los Kjarkas, Chavela Vargas as well as many traditional styles of folk music. The name "Mestisa' comes from the Spanish word meaning to be of mixed racial and cultural origins - something that describes the band members well, and something that they try to encapsulate in their music.

They regularly perform to sell-out audiences

THE MUSICAL SANDPIT

Not just an ordinary gig, a music showcase of the teenage mind, something that is distinctly lacking in Leeds today.

Featuring:
Seas-Of-Green - Fresh from their 10th release, Seas-Of-Green are a band described at a recent show as a whirlwind of crazy, manic, psychedelic pop rock. With a unique set of music inspired by the moon, balloons and missing cats, Seas-Of-Green never fail to put on a show and deliver a unique musical concoctions erved with a side order of poppy hooks.

Glassbody - After playing Leeds and Reading festival last year the only way is up for these angular guitar posters. Described as dramatic, heartbreaking, epic and intimate; their sound it delightfully difficult to peg down.

Le Servo De Spock - A darkly comic acoustic duo that seeming blend wincingly-honest lyrical themes and absurd surreal cybernetic fantasies.

A special recorded performance by:

Jacobean Ruff - Acoustic folk inspired by myths of ancient times. You might have heard these guys from their recent plays on Radio 1 and Radio 6Music.

Introducing: Rosie Cook and The Lemons - A female electronic band fronted by Rosie Cook. Combining beautiful melodies with bluesy chord changes. A real one to watch on the Leeds Music Scene.

Sue McCreeth /headingley-events/event-details Thu, 16 May 2013 13:40:56 +0000 fra Sue McCreeth has the dubious honour of being dubbed quite possibly the most under-rated vocalist in the UK. With three critically acclaimed albums to her name, she has been universally acclaimed by the UK press and international audiences alike as one of the most original and inventive vocal talents around.

Sue is a highly trained classical singer, who has nevertheless retained a very
beautiful jazz tone in her voice over four octaves.

A multi-instrumentalist with a degree in music from Sussex University and many years post-graduate study with Joy Mammen (ret. Royal Academy of Music), a formidable technique, ferociously pitch accurate, the ability to write music which sounds like serious fusion jazz, self-penned neat arrangements, and emotion to burn, she nevertheless can come across in performance as really quite fey. This is what makes her so magical to watch and hear, and is quite possibly why she has had the opportunity to work with some of the best jazz musicians in the UK: Andrew Cleyndert, Dave Green, John Horler, Colin Dudman and many others.

The charm of her style lies in the clear modest simplicity and grace with which she carries off the most daunting musical feats.
